Why is it so expensive to live and buy a house in Colorado?

In my blog last week Has Colorado turned into Whole Foods? I asked the question what how has Colorado changed and has Colorado now turned into the Whole Foods business model .  I was pretty surprised at the resounding answer regarding Colorado’s shift to the similar business model as whole foods favoring a  much more expensive  product as opposed to Walmart or Costco.

What was in the survey data on Why Colorado has gotten so expensive

A whopping 93% felt that Colorado has begun to emulate whole foods.  On the flip side 7% disagreed.

Top Comments on Colorado embracing the whole foods business model

The comments were pretty interesting from the survey, here are the top few that echo the general consensus:

  • Colorado is one of the most regulated states in the country. Ultimately, it is the consumer who pays for the regulation because businesses pass on the cost.
  • My basis for saying this is that the sticker shock I used to feel when shopping at WF, I now feel at Safeway and almost anytime I look at a bill, particularly restaurants. Up until about 2015 I felt I could say that denver was a place where one could ‘get a lot of house for the money’ and that was true of many things. Nothing feels like a bargain any longer
  • Your article says it better than I could say it, but I’d add that the majority of Coloradans are in favor of any type of tax and continue to vote for politicians who increase entitlements but do not consider the budget. Liberal paradise! 2. Good to own respectable single-family homes as rentals

Summary

It is sad that Colorado’s legislature has fully embraced the whole foods model and yet they are perplexed that housing costs have increased along with just about everything else.  Unfortunately I don’t see an off ramp for the largest drivers of cost increases stemming from government regulations and taxes.  Hopefully voters in the November elections come to their senses that continued spending cannot solve the fiscal issues facing Colorado.
